Fish Bowl Aquarium
A fish bowl aquarium can provide a lot of entertainment as well as a beautiful focal point for a room. There is nothing more attractive and serene than a fish bowl aquarium filled with gently moving plants and colorful tropical fish. Aquariums take very little work to maintain and yet can be the most beautiful fixture in your home!
There are several sizes and shapes to choose from when getting a fish bowl aquarium. The size will depend on how many fish you want and how big or small they are. Many fish can grow quite big so be sure to choose a fish bowl aquarium that will accommodate the ones you want. A plecostomus, for example, can grow quite large if the aquarium is big enough.

Once you have your fish bowl aquarium set up properly you won’t have a lot of maintenance to deal with. Of course, filters have to be changed and every so often you’ll need to thoroughly clean it. If you have a good bottom gravel filter and keep the water level where it should be, your aquarium will pretty much take care of itself other than your needing to feed the fish daily.
Aquariums can be an excellent way to teach a child how to take responsibility for a pet. Fish are wonderful introductions to the world of nature; they don’t have to be walked, bathed or taken to the veterinarian! A child can learn to feed and water a pet with none of the labor intensive care of a cat or dog. And while you don’t get the pleasure of petting or hugging something furry, watching the fish interact with each other and swim around the aquarium is entertaining and relaxing.
It’s important to get fish that are compatible when stocking your aquarium. “Community” fish are those that can co-exist together peacefully and are excellent choices for a first aquarium. Neon Tetras, Guppies and Mollies are beautiful fish that live well together but as they are prodigious breeders you should be careful to either separate the sexes or buy the colorful males. Swordtails and Rosy Barbs are colorful and friendly to their tank mates. Angel fish, beautiful as they are, don’t get along very well with other fish and should not be mixed with others. Choose your fish carefully if you want a harmonious tank! Generally, you should have one fish for every gallon of water your tank hold. Certain fish prefer to school, or swim together at all times and will not thrive without others of their kind.
Be sure to ask the advice of a knowledgeable employee when picking out your fish. If the staff cannot help you it would probably be best to patronize a pet store whose staff is more hands-on and has taken the time to learn about their stock.
