Aquarium Decorations
Fish aquarium decorations are one of the most enjoyable steps of setting up your aquarium. They can be colorful, funny, mysterious and even spooky! You can get fish aquarium decorations that give a theme to your tank, make it look like random artifacts scattered across an ocean bed or use them to give your tank the appearance of a natural habitat.
After deciding if you want your tank to look like a theme park or a natural setting you will find there is a wide variety of ornaments and plants to choose from. The only rule you have to follow is to get fish aquarium decorations that are commercially produced. These types of tank accoutrements are specially sterilized so that no foreign bacteria can invade your tank and possibly sicken your fish and other creatures. Even though that rock you found last year would look amazing in your tank, it can harbor parasites or other detrimental elements. Scrubbing it, bleaching it or other methods of cleaning can be a death knell to your fish no matter how careful you are.

You’ll find that there are fish aquarium decorations that you can hook up to an air pump so that they open and close, like a treasure chest or move as if currents are disturbing them. You can strew the bottom of the tank with waving skeletons, clamshells with life-like motion or even Ferris wheels that spin. Whatever your whim, you will find it in the aquatic section of your favorite pet supply store.
If you would like your tank to look natural, there are fish aquarium decorations to do that, too. You will find replicas of ocean and fresh water shells, driftwood and other natural objects found on a lake or ocean floor. There are plastic plants that look like the real thing or you can get living plants that will nourish your tank’s residents and raise the oxygen level in the water. There are a few living plants that will grow quite rapidly, however, so if you want low maintenance you must inquire carefully about the growth rate of any plant that appeals to you.
The gravel on the bottom of the tank is the canvas for your work of art. There is natural looking gravel for an authentic tank bed or a variety of different colors that you can mix or match. Mixing white and turquoise gravel will give you a bright, tropical look while a bed of maroon or dark blue will lend the tank a mysterious appearance that is perfect for ghost fish and allows a plecostomus to blend in with its environment. Clown fish, colorful Guppies and Neon Tetras have colors that are complimented by neutral gravel while mostly mono-color fish such as Oscars and Mollies can use a little contrast.
You’ll enjoy planning and placing your fish aquarium decorations! Be sure to have them all in place for at least 24 hours before populating your tank.
